Inter Milan are weighing up a sale of Nicolo Barella this summer, with Crystal Palace emerging as an unexpected Premier League suitor.

Palace’s recruitment team has been looking to Serie A for a statement move, and Barella has been identified as the priority target for a deal that would reset the club’s transfer ceiling.

Newcastle United are also tracking the Italy international as they look to strengthen their midfield, setting up a potential Premier League bidding contest once the European window opens. Barella, 29, is under contract until 2029, and his profile as a high-energy organiser and ball-progressor makes him a rare market opportunity for clubs aiming to control central areas.

Palace are preparing an opening offer in the region of €70m to take to Inter, a fee that would represent a record outlay for the Selhurst Park side. The club could look to increase that figure if they secure a major sale for Adam Wharton, which would help underwrite a deal of this scale.

Even with the financial intent, Palace face significant sporting hurdles in persuading Barella to leave San Siro. The expected departure of Oliver Glasner at the end of the season adds uncertainty over the next head coach and the wider project, while the lack of European football in the near term could prove a decisive factor in any negotiations.
